Free Essays on Pompeii

The morning of August 24th 79 A.D. started out as any other day in Pompeii. The streets were full of people trying to do their daily chores and activities, unaware that it was the day that would be forever engraved in history. The Pompeians settled in that area mainly because of soil and agriculture, but were also mesmerized by the beautiful location. They did not know the dangers of the neighboring volcano and so believed themselves to be very lucky to find such a place. The Pompeians were led to immortalization by uncontrollable forces of nature and their lack of knowledge. Although a very unfortunate disaster, Pompeii provided future generations with a great deal of knowledge about their civilization. Campania, the region in western Italy where the site of Pompeii is located attracted its inhabitants with its fertility, rich soil and magnificent location. The main reason the Pompeians settled in Campania was for the soil. The ashes from previous eruptions had changed to rich, volcanic soil full of minerals, providing great agriculture. Some areas had up to three crops of grain per year. Historians have concluded, â€Å"In ancient times, the region’s crop yield was 6 times higher than the average of the rest of the peninsula.† However, the soil and the crops were not the only reason the Pompeians inhabited Campania. Free Essays on Pompeii Free Essays on Pompeii Pompeii Pompeii is possibly the best-documented catastrophe in Antiquity. Because of it, we know now how the Pompeians lived because they left behind an extensive legacy of art, including monuments, sculptures and paintings. Pompeii lay on a plateau of ancient lava near the Bay of Naples in western Italy in a region called Campania, less than 1.6 kilometers from the foot of Mount Vesuvius. With the coast to the west and the Apennine Mountains to the East, Campania is a fertile plain, traversed by two major rivers and rich soil. However, in the early days, it was not a remarkable city. Scholars have not been able to identify Pompeii’s original inhabitants. The first people to settle in this region were probably prehistoric hunters and fishers. By at least the eight century B.C., a group of Italic people known as the Oscans occupied the region; they most likely established Pompeii, although the exact date of its origin is unknown. â€Å"The root of the word Pompeii would appear to be t he Oscan word for the number five, pompe, which suggests that either the community consisted of five hamlets or, perhaps, was settled by a family group (gens Pompeia)†(Kraus 7). In the course of the eight century B.C., Greek and Etruscan colonization stimulated the development of Pompeii as a city around the area of the Forum. A point for important trade routes, it became a place for trading towards the inland. Up until the middle of the 5th century B.C., the city was dominated politically by the Etruscans. In the course of the 6th century B.C., the influence of Greek culture is also documented by terracottas, ceramics and architecture. A group of warriors from Samnium, called Samnite, invaded the region in the 400’s B.C. Pompeii remained a relatively unimportant village until the 200’s B.C., when the town entered a prosperous period of building and expansion. The Romans defeated the Samnites, and Pompeii became part of the emerging Roman state. Pomp... Free Essays on Pompeii The morning of August 24th 79 A.D. started out as any other day in Pompeii. ACT Rules and Regulations What You HAVE to Know

ACT Rules and Regulations What You HAVE to Know SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips Because the ACT is such a high-stakes test, the folks at ACT, Inc. have implemented a series of rules to ensure that there is no cheating and that all students have as close to the same test-taking experience as possible. Before you take the ACT, you should familiarize yourself with these important rules. You don’t want to start using some scratch paper that you brought and then be dismissed from the test and have your score canceled. Know the rules so you don’t find yourself in such a situation. In this article, I’ll explain the rules for the ACT and the consequences for breaking them. The Purpose of ACT Rules There are rules for the ACT to prevent cheating and ensure the same test-taking experience for all students. Through these rules, the ACT folks are trying to create a fair, standardized test-taking experience for everyone who takes the ACT. If certain people are given an advantage, that could affect college admissions and future ACT scores. Now that we know why the rules exist, let's take an in-depth look at the rules you need to follow when you take the ACT. All the ACT Rules You Should Know You should review the prohibited behavior during your ACT. Also, these are the items you must remember on test day. Let's go over both sets of rules in depth.I'll emphasize the important regulations to make sure there's no confusion. Key Guidelines You Must Follow on Test Day Be on time! You won’t be admitted to the test if you're late. The reporting time is 8:00 AM, but I advise that you arrive at your testing center by 7:30. When I took the ACT, there was a long line that moved rather slowly to enter the testing center. I showed up at 7:30 and entered the room I took my test in shortly before 8:00. Make sure you're only working on the designated section. If you’re taking the math test and realize that you messed up on an English question, there’s nothing you can do at that point. Going back to a previous section or looking ahead in your test booklet is considered cheating. Don’t talk about exam content at any time. This is a tough rule to follow, but don’t talk about specific questions during breaks or after the test. The ACT doesn’t want you sharing information about test questions because questions are often reused. I know you’ll be tempted to talk about that annoying reading passage with your friend, but don’t, especially at the test center. A strict proctor can cancel your score for doing that. When you arrive at the test center, turn your phone off and put it in your backpack. If you look at your phone or if it makes any noise during the test, you can be dismissed and have your score canceled. You can post an Instagram pic of what you wore to the test after you get home. This is probably obvious, but don't do anything that can be considered cheating. Cheating isn't only unethical, but also you don't want to face the consequences if you get caught. What You Must Bring to the Test Admission ticket - You must have your admission ticket on test day. Photo identification- Make sure to bring an acceptable photo ID. You won't be admitted to the exam if you don't have your ticket and proper ID. Bring an acceptable ID to the ACT What You Should Bring No. 2 pencils with good erasers- On the ACT, you're not supposed to use mechanical pencils or pens. Don't be that person anxiously asking for a pencil right before the test starts. Also, a good eraser is likely to come in handy. A permitted calculator- You can't use calculators that make noise, have a QWERTY keyboard, or use a power cord. You can't use calculator apps on a cell phone or laptop. Check out this page for the specific ACT rules on calculators. A watch- I recommend using a watch to help yourself keep track of time on each section. The proctor may forget to remind you when time is running out on a section, and the clock in the room may not be working. However, make sure that the watch you bring doesn’t make noise and that the alarm is off. If an alarm goes off during the test, you can be dismissed and have your score canceled. Miscellaneous items- Here are some things you should bring that will make your test-taking experience more comfortable and less stressful:a backpack, snacks and water for breaks, extra batteries for your calculator, and extra pencils and erasers. You may not be allowed to eat in the testing room, but it’s a long test so it’s good to refuel during breaks. What You Shouldn't Bring Any electronic device other than your watch and cell phone- If you’re seen with a laptop or personal computer, that will be considered cheating. Make sure you’re not using any audio or video recording devices. That will also be considered cheating. (Also remember that your phonemust be put away.) Scratch paper- If an exception applies and you’re allowed to use scratch paper, you may only use paper that ACT has authorized or supplied to you. A dictionary or thesaurus- The only resource you're allowed to use is a permitted calculator to help you with math. Possible Consequences for Rules Violations The consequences for violating any of these rules can vary. Often the consequence will depend on the strictness of your proctor or test center. If you don't have proper ID or your admission ticket, you may not be admitted to the test. If you’re caught violating other rules, you can be dismissed from the test and possibly have your score canceled. In certain situations, you can have your score withheld if there is suspected cheating. In the most extreme cheating situations, the ACT can even take legal action. It's most definitely in your best interest to know and follow the rules. What's Next? Learn the 21 ACT tips you should be using and 14 last-minute ACT tips. Music Market Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

Music Market - Essay Example Increases the thought as to whether or not the availability of illegal digital music online has an affect on the traditional music delivery sales. Thus driving the music industries marketing developers into over coming such possible downfalls in the traditional music delivery sale statistics and push for a contemporary style of integrating tradition and modernism into an approach that will appeal to the higher and lower income groups, therefore hopefully decreasing the consumers need to illegally acquire their favorite tunes online and buy at a nominal subscription fee. The Australian music industry has been performing experiments within the online music industry, by various companies fighting to stay alive and keep up with the technological storm. Various online stores such as HMV (http://www.hmv.com.au) and Sanity (http://www.sanity.com.au), JB Hi-Fi (http://www.jbhifi.com.au), Chaos Music (http://www.chaosmusic.com), Whammo (http://www.whammo.com.au) and the Dick Smith Electronics (http://www.dse.com.au) have and are been supplied with downloadable music by a hosting company called Destra (http://www.destra.com). In April 2004, ninemsn had launched their music download service (http://ninemsn.com.au/music) and other telecommunications companies such as Telstra (http://www.telstra.com) have been also experimenting within a similar neighborhood, by keeping up with subscription based music supply, the Australian and global market will stay alive says Ninemsn Pty Ltd (1997 - 2007). The most innovative distribution of technological modernism within the global market is the Apple iTunes (http://www.itunes.com) system. Declaring more than thirteen million legal downloads. Apple has not yet announced their release date within the Australian market yet, however it will be inevitable. Apple iTunes allows the consumer to pay for their favorite tune, download it, use the tune as they like, however only accessing the ability to play that tune on their Apple iPod player and no other devices, thus limiting the cause for mass piracy. The one area that has succeeded against piracy of mass illegal music downloading is through convincing the consumers to pay for the downloaded music as ring-tones to their mobile phones. Ninemsn Pty Ltd (1997 - 2007) stated the ring-tone sales were escalating over revenue sales of one billion US dollars within 2003 alone, according to the IDC (http://www.idc.com.au). The modern consumers are demanding for more and more as newer kinds of technological devices and file delivery formats are being designed and released onto the market. The buying power has shifted from traditional delivery devices to more modern digital delivery devices and software. Global statistics have shown the consumers would rather unethically download illegal music through free systems such as Kazaa, because as the traditional music delivery devices such as Cd's and DVD's prices increase, the consumers are forced to buy less than what they had in the past because it is just too expensive to buy full albums and only essentially require half of the songs on it. This is one of the factors why consumers are moving towards the online music market and because it is extremely simple to find the songs they require online rather than searching in a If Music is the Food of Love, Log on 3 music

Response Strategies Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words - 1

Response Strategies - Assignment Example This is done so as to encourage the idea that a security breech would be difficult to bring about. Deterrence is usually practiced in all private and government agencies where security personnel are required to be on their feet at all times, to conduct random patrols and to react effectively to any possible intrusions. In this way an impression of high security is created in order to deter a possible attack. However, this method is only affective for low-level threats that are less motivated from the start, and may not be as effective against high-risk threats that are carefully maneuvered by the criminals. Denial Strategies are often used for the security of certain materials and equipments, for example, hazardous chemicals, nuclear weapons, explosives etc. Since use or release of these materials can put the common public at risk, a denial strategy is applied by which access to such material is prohibited. In order to prevent any sort of breech, highly trained and armed security per sonnel are positioned so as to ensure timely reaction against any attack. Containment strategy is applied against theft of an asset. This strategy is usually practiced in places like banks and museums where valuable assets are in danger of being stolen.

Information Systems Essay Example for Free

Information Systems Essay This facility is one of the most leading and innovative healthcare organizations. It provides a full spectrum of healthcare and wellness programs throughout North and South Carolina. Our diverse network of more than 650 care locations includes academic medical centers, hospitals, healthcare pavilions, physician practices, destination centers, surgical and rehabilitation centers, home health agencies, nursing homes, and hospice and palliative care. Carolinas HealthCare System works to improve and enhance the overall health and wellbeing of its communities through high quality patient care, education and research programs, and a variety of collaborative partnerships and initiatives. Carolinas HealthCare System is an outgrowth of a community hospital originally founded in 1940. Since that time Carolinas HealthCare System has grown into one of the nation’s largest and most comprehensive systems, with more than 48,000 employees, more than 6,200 licensed beds (acute care and post-acute care), and an annual budget exceeding $6. billion (comparable to many Fortune 500 companies). Premier facilities include Levine Cancer Institute, Levine Children’s Hospital, Sanger Heart Vascular Institute, CMC Neurology and The Transplant Center. Other specialties include maternity (regular and high risk), assisted reproduction, interventional oncology, radiation therapy, minimally invasive surgery, and many others. Through careful integration of services, Carolinas HealthCare System has built some of the nation’s largest accredited multi-hospital networks for treatment of stroke and heart attack. Ultimately, our success is determined not by the buildings we construct, but by the investment we make in the people and programs that bring each new facility to life. We are providing a broad framework of support that enables extraordinary professionals to bring caring, commitment, integrity and teamwork to a vitally important healing mission. The motivating force behind all of this activity is fulfilling our duty to meet community needs. Each of our hospitals is locally managed by a hospital administrator who makes ecisions that affect each hospital. Carolinas HealthCare System (CHS) is governed by a group of people who are dedicated to serving our community by providing the healthcare resources needed for our growing region. The Board of Commissioners and Advisors meets on a regular basis to review policies and procedures, as well as current and changing healthcare rules and regulations for our state and nation that impact how we provide these services. Below are the members of these committees. CHS uses electronic records which is called Canopy. Canopy is Carolinas HealthCare System’s electronic medical record program, formerly called (EPACT). It is one of our most critical strategic initiatives and a significant leap forward to bolster our ability to improve clinical outcomes, ensure patient safety, and enhance our delivery of quality care through technology. All physicians and mid-level providers will use the electronic system for tasks such as CPOE, Medication Management and Structured Electronic Documentation. Transcription services will not change. The information that is dictated now may be dictated on and after conversion to CPOE. The expectation is that dictation will not increase, but will decrease over time. The physicians and nurses all play a big part in the facility. They use the information systems to document the health concerns of the patients, and to also transmit the information to documents that can be easily read and understood. Many employees use the system to add, obtain, and program the patient records and personal information. Carolinas Healthcare System provides convenient outpatient programs in physical, occupational and speech therapies throughout Mecklenburg and surrounding counties. We are also leaders in the field of workers compensation and vocational rehabilitation, aiding patients at their workplaces and helping them regain work skills if an injury or illness interferes with employment. Functional Capacity Evaluations are used to ascertain if a patient may return to work successfully. Designed to accelerate each patients recovery efforts, our outpatient facilities are staffed by accredited specialists utilizing the most advanced equipment and techniques available. With an extensive network of outpatient centers throughout the region, we are always within reach of individuals seeking therapy, and skilled at providing the care, support and confidence vital to successful rehabilitation. The facility is very discrete with the way they access their records. Everyone has a to login to a secure network to bring up the sites for the employees to use. With more than 30 hospitals and more than 600 other care locations, CHS is strongly committed to robust electronic medical record (EMR) solutions. The goal is to guarantee that a patients most recent information is quickly and securely available to all the medical providers who need it. This enables everyone on the care team to better coordinate and personalize treatments. Every patient encounter is electronically documented. For that reason, physicians at any point of contact can quickly research and gauge possible drug interactions, avoid or treat allergic reactions, or judge the possible impact of previous injuries or surgeries. Having all of this information immediately accessible not only saves time, it helps a patients record speak for them if necessary. Carolinas HealthCare’s Information Services Department worked with emergency-department physicians and Cerner Corp. (NASDAQ:CERN), its electronic-health-record vendor, to design the single-order entry computer application. The streamlined order-entry process was piloted in 2011 at CMC-Northeast, a Concord hospital that has one of the busiest emergency departments in North Carolina. It was launched simultaneously with the rollout of the health-care system’s electronic-health-record initiative which features computerized physician-order entry. During the pilot, order entries were reduced by nearly 2. 5 minutes per patient. That will save more than 2,600 physician hours per year. This facility has many positives about the employees and the site. I would like to be a part of this facility so I could put my skills to work and help the community have healthier people. Some of the strengths about the system are that it is very secure. There is a login for every employee to access in order to get in. Some of the downsides are that many others may try to hack the system and breach every ones privacy. It is important to have a secure system to protect the patients’ rights and information. It is possible to obtain policies, procedures, brochures, and training at this facility. They even provide different schools to educate their employees, and the new individuals that want to pursue a career with them. This would be a great company for interested people to work at. It is very important that they show that their interests are in the wellbeing of their employees and newcomers.

Three Types of Happiness Essay -- Happiness Essays

â€Å"Happiness cannot be traveled to, owned, earned, worn or consumed. Happiness is the spiritual experience of living every minute with love, grace and gratitude.† -- Denis Waitley Many people believe that happiness is simply a state of well being; to me, happiness is much more complex. Absolute happiness is anything that brings feelings of pure bliss to an individual’s life. One can gain happiness from simple pleasures of life, such as receiving a kiss from a three-year old, to advanced pleasures, such as a happy marriage or a successful career. Dr. Seligman, a well known psychologist and proponent of positive psychology, identified three types of happiness: pleasant life, engaged life, and meaningful life. Although Dr. Seligman states that the ultimate forms of happiness are â€Å"meaningful life† and â€Å"engaged life†, I believe that â€Å"pleasant life† happiness is just as important. One type of happiness is known as â€Å"engaged life†. â€Å"Engaged life† happiness involves exploring and harnessing one’s strengths and talents to the benefit of himself and society. I experience â€Å"engaged life† happiness when I play my piano. As soon as touch the smooth, ivory keys, I feel an intense surge of joy, and all my surroundings seem to be just a blur; the music soon takes over me, and I am lost in a world of Beethoven, Mozart, and Tchaikovsky. When I am at my piano, all my cares and doubts seem to disappear, and my life seems, at that solitary moment in time, to make perfect sense. Music is my life and my soul. Another type of happiness is â€Å"meaningful life†. â€Å"Meaningful life† happiness, according to Seligman, is the most genuine form of happiness. It is the epitome of life; the point where one feels completely and utterly satisfied... ...† and â€Å"meaningful life† happiness are truer forms of happiness as compared to â€Å"pleasant life† happiness, I stand firm in my belief that the simplistic pleasures one obtains from â€Å"pleasant life† happiness are just as powerful as the joys one obtains from â€Å"engaged life† and â€Å"meaningful life† happiness. My blackberry picking outing enabled me to not only obtain bucketfuls of delectable blackberries but also to spend precious moments of the day with my family, and that, in itself, makes me truly happy. Political Climate of the 1980s Essay

The period starting from 1980 to 1991 was a dawn for the newly implemented international challenges and changes as sponsored by the government of the United States of America. This period was dominated by the immense influence of the Reagan administration. In 1980, Ronald Regan was elected into the presidential post, serving eight years as the president of the United States of America. In addition, this period also determined and strengthened the hegemonic leadership of the American government as the Soviet Union fell towards the end of 1980s, hence declaring the Cold War over. At the start of this period, Reagan implemented economic policies that revolutionized and saved the declining economy of the United States. This set of economic reforms became well-known as â€Å"Reaganomics. † This was comprised of new and aggressive fiscal policies that were meant to decrease the inflation in the American economy, and at the same time steps were taken to further establish the American economy as the strongest in the international arena. The brief span of 1981 to 1986, certain fiscal policies have been implemented in order to keep the economic policies abreast with international changes and to save the American economy from further inflation. In 1981, the Economic Recovery Act was implemented. This was the first Fiscal Policy that was enacted and which had three components all related towards the imposition of tax cuts. In 1982, corporate taxes were imposed. And at the end of 1986, the American economy has undergone three phases, all of which were dominated by changes in the fiscal and monetary policies and expansion. In effect, deficit rate decreased significantly as compared to the economic status experienced during the previous administrations (Looney 1995). In the field of politics, certain changes have also been made. In 1982 and 1985, the involvement of the American government in international struggles became rather pronounced. The Reagan administration opposed the retreat of the American forces during the height of the Vietnam War, and as such, he worked towards the eradication of communist ideas during his presidential term. As such, the Reagan administration took part in defeating the communist forces that were rampant during the period. The American government took active involvement in the military struggles in Cambodia and in the Philippines. In line with this, during the Reagan era, the tensed confrontation brought by the Cold War finally ended. The 40 years of hostility was broken down at the fall of the Soviet Union towards the end of 1980s (Hodges 2000). The breakdown of the Soviet bloc and the end of the Cold War spelled out significant changes to the international order. The Soviet Union, which was the main competitor of the United States in terms of politics, economy and military strength, posted challenge for world leadership for the United States. Hence, at the fall of the Soviet bloc, the post was left for the American government alone. Thus, at the end of the Cold War, the United States government was prompted to make certain actions that strengthened their influence in other smaller countries. Communist insurgents were greatly weakened during this period, and as such, capitalist motives were pushed forward. Towards the end of this era, more economic policies were implemented that were geared towards globalization and liberalization. With the immense influence and power that the American government posted, most of the countries – developed and developing countries – followed the suit after America. Thus, this period was largely highlighted by the increasing influence of the United States of America towards the establishment of a globalized community which is still prevailing during this generation.

Mercutio vs Romeo Essay

Love is a hard thing to define but lust is a burning desire for another person, and it usually doesn’t last a very long time. Love can transform over years and still remain consistent. Lust is superficial when only the appearance is considered but nothing else, which can be called ‘love at first sight’. Lust is only a short-term relationship, whereas love leads to a deeper understanding of the other person and one develops affection and caring for them. Mercutio’s idea of love doesn’t involve commitment, is more realistic than Romeo’s view and Mercutio doesn’t allow love to inflict any pain. Romeo’s idea of love includes commitment, and has a deeper, more passionate love and he allows himself to be vulnerable to his emotions and lets them take over. Mercutio and Romeo’s view on love are both similar in the sense that they involve desire for a girl and they are driven by their emotions. Both are fuelled by madness and this leads to them making rash decisions that result in a big loss and in Mercutio’s case, his life. Mercutio’s anger and feud with Tybalt leads him to go mad and be stabbed to death. Romeo’s anger gets the better of him which results in him stabbing Tybalt, after just having married Juliet. In the end, Romeo’s grief over Juliet’s ‘death’ overcomes his will to listen to reason and this poor decision ends up terminating his life too soon. Another similarity is that both characters are captivated by looks. They both speak of a woman’s outer appearance and have rarely talked about their personalities. When Romeo first sees Juliet, he marvels at her beauty without trying to figure out who see really was. O, she doth teach the torches to burn bright! It seems she hangs upon the cheek of night, Like a rich jewel in an Ethiop’s ear; Beauty too rich for use, for earth too dear† (1. 5. L. 44-47) In Act II, Scene 2, we see Mercutio trying to lure Romeo out by describing Rosaline’s appearance, â€Å"I conjure thee by Rosaline’s bright eyes, By her high forehead and her scarlet lip, By her fine foot, straight leg, and quivering thigh. †(2. 1. L. 17-19) In the start of the play, Romeo and Mercutio think that all ther e is to ‘love’ is having sex. Even the servants, Sampson and Gregory mentioned wanting to sexually harassing the maids of the Montagues. â€Å"That shows thee a weak slave; for the weakest goes to the wall. † â€Å"’Tis true; and therefore women, being the weaker vessels, are ever thrust to the wall: therefore I will push Montague’s men from the wall and thrust his maids to the wall. † (1. 1. L. 12-17) This proves that most men in this time thought of themselves as superiors compared to women. As the play progresses, Romeo’s view on love changes after he meets Juliet. After meeting Juliet, he falls in love with her as a whole instead of just her appearance. While there are minor similarities between Mercutio and Romeo’s view on love, the differences are pronounced and deserve thorough examination because the line between lust and love is very confusing and many people in society mix the two up. On one hand, Mercutio’s view can be described as ‘a chase for something sexual’. He never mentions settling down with a girl and having a committed relationship. Mercutio, unlike Romeo, does not believe in fate deciding his path, instead he lives in the moment. Mercutio doesn’t let love overthrow his conscience and guide his actions. Romeo says â€Å"Is love a tender thing? It is too rough, too rude, too boisterous, and it pricks like a thorn. † (1. 4. L. 25-26), to which Mercutio replies with â€Å"If love be rough with you, be rough with love; Prick love for pricking, and you beat love down. † (1. 4. L. 27-28) In those lines, he talks about how in order to defeat love and to not have it afflict with your actions is to have sex instead of loving someone and go through the pain of them not reciprocating your feelings. On the other hand, Romeo has a romanticized view which is shown by his strong reliance on fate, and the stars. In these lines, Romeo says â€Å"I am too enpierced with his shaft, To soar with his light feathers, and so bound, I cannot bound a pitch above dull woe. Under love’s heavy burden do I sink† (1. 4. L. 19-22) Romeo is being pulled down by the amount of pain from not being able to see Rosaline. At first he’s a victim of being caught up in Rosaline’s looks and mistook it as love. It wasn’t until he met Juliet that he truly discovered the true meaning. Romeo wallows in self-pity and loves by night. â€Å"I have night’s cloak to hide me from their sight; And but thou love me, let them find me here: My life were better ended by their hate, then death prorogued, wanting of thy love† (2. 2. L. 75-78) In contrast, Mercutio appears in the play mostly in the day and shows that he believes he can control his life and is more realistic than Romeo. He serves as the contrasting character to show a ifferent perspective on love from Romeo’s passionate, and emotional view on love. In culmination, Romeo’s idea of love is stimulated, loyal, and susceptible to pain. Romeo shows his vulnerability and readers and viewers of the movie have an easier time relating to his feeling for heartbreak. His loyal and never changing love for Juliet even as she was ‘dead’ made readers fall in love with his character. Although Romeo and Mercutio have different perspectives on love, they also have similarities which make them able to be such good friends.

Public Health And Role Of Govt Example

Public Health And Role Of Govt Example Public Health And Role Of Govt – Coursework Example Q Ans. One action that the US health system can take to combat preventable deaths caused by smoking is illegalize tobacco use. To limit the use of tobacco, it can be legalized but made too expensive for common man to afford every day. While the elite will still be able to use tobacco every day, the elite is also rich enough to afford too expensive treatment should there be a need. â€Å"The government should also use regulatory, pricing, and health information mechanisms to substantially reduce salt and trans fats in prepared and packaged foods and to support research that can find effective strategies for modifying the other dietary, lifestyle, and metabolic risk factors that cause large numbers of premature deaths in the U.S.† (Ezzati cited in Harvard T.H. Chan, 2009). In doing so, the government is unarguably intruding on the lives of individuals in its attempt to modify the behavior so that preventable deaths can be reduced, but some level of intrusion is not only inevitab le, but also necessary for the well-being of the people. Government is not only intruding on people’s lives in this manner, but government has no option but to intrude in all matters ranging from traffic laws to media censorship. Being responsible for the well-being, empowerment, and development of the state and the people, the government should be deeply involved in influencing the decisions made by people. However, while it engages in efforts to make people’s lives healthier, the government should also produce and broadcast educative programs that create awareness among people regarding the necessity and benefits of the laws and restrictions imposed by the government. Word Choice Viscous vs. Vicious

Word Choice Viscous vs. Vicious Word Choice: Viscous vs. Vicious â€Å"Viscous† and â€Å"vicious† are both adjectives. They’re also close enough in spelling that it’s easy to get them mixed up when you see them written down. However, these terms have very different meanings, so check out our guide below to find out how they should be used. Viscous (Thick and Sticky) We use â€Å"viscous† to describe something that is thick and sticky. For instance: The mixture was too viscous to stir. Honey is a viscous foodstuff produced by bees. A â€Å"viscous† liquid is typically something that doesn’t flow smoothly. You can see this for yourself if you look at how quickly honey or molasses flow down an incline compared to water. The thickness of a liquid is known as its â€Å"viscosity† (e.g., water has low viscosity compared to honey). Vicious (Violent or Cruel) Most of the time, â€Å"vicious† means â€Å"violent,† â€Å"fierce,† or â€Å"cruel.† For example: The vicious dog snarled when it saw the cat. They began a vicious assault on the enemy fort at dawn. Sometimes, however, we can also use â€Å"vicious† to mean â€Å"painful† or â€Å"intense†: I’ve had a vicious headache all day. Even here, though, â€Å"vicious† implies that something is harmful or negative. We see this negativity again in the phrase â€Å"vicious circle.† This describes a process where two problems cause or reinforce one another, making it difficult to escape or solve either one. For example, imagine you have a toothache but you are scared to go to the dentist. Putting off going may make the condition worse, requiring a more painful treatment, which could make going to the dentist even more scary, etc. This cycle makes each problem worse, so it is a â€Å"vicious† circle. The Vicious Cycle of Dental Fear would also make a great name for a black metal band.(Image: 18961065RP/wikimedia) Summary: Viscous or Vicious? Although these terms look similar, they have very different meanings: Something is viscous if it is thick and sticky, like honey or molasses. To be vicious is usually to be cruel, violent, or dangerously aggressive. You may also need to be wary of spellcheckers with these terms. If you type â€Å"vicous† by accident, for example, Microsoft Word will suggest both â€Å"viscous† and â€Å"vicious† as corrections. You therefore need to be careful about which term you pick from the list when correcting typos! To make doubly sure your writing is error free, though, you can always ask a proofreader.

Can you Light Your Water on Fire Movie Review Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Can you Light Your Water on Fire - Movie Review Example Fox set out across America looking for information about the methods of drilling natural gas and their effects on the environment and people’s health and areas within the drilling locations. Locally, he paid a visit to Dimock, Susquehanna County, where the drilling of natural gas had already been happening. A family that he profiled had had worries about their supply of water being contaminated. He established similar worries in inhabitants of other states that were host to drilling, such as Texas, Wyoming, Utah, and Colorado (Www.theoildrum.com). One of the most significant concerns presented by the movie is the ruining of watersheds. The waters are being contaminated, and fishes die. The movie also shows inhabitants of a region drilled in Pennsylvania who reveal their ability to set ablaze the water oozing from their kitchen sinks. Another serious concern is that the inhabitants, including their pets, developed severe health problems, as a result of contaminated water after the drilling started. Therefore, health concern is another crucial issue. The movie reveals that hydraulic fracturing poses an intolerable risk to public health, and thus should be brought to a stop. Chevron argues that developing this resource of Shale’s natural gas can facilitate enhanced fuel job growth, strengthened economies and energy security. He says that natural gas from shale rock is providing the U.S. with cleaner, affordable, reliable and reliably produced energy. Chevron says that natural gas is the cleanest-burning conservative fuel that produces lower greenhouse gas’ levels discharges than heavier hydrocarbon fuels such as oil and coal. Natural gas resources that have been developed from shale rock have brought about cheaper natural gas for consumers in the U.S., making it cheaper for Americans to generate electricity and heat their homes from natural gas (Www.chevron.com).
